The word Rhinoceros comes from the Greek word “Rhino” (nose) and “ceros” (horn). The rhinoceros is a large, herbivorous mammal identified by its characteristic horned snout. Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same main ingredient as is found in human hair and fingernails, combined with calcium and melanin.

Because their horns are used in folk medicine for their supposed healing properties, rhinos have been hunted to near extinction. The horns are also sold as trophies or decorations, but more often ground up and used in traditional Chinese  medicine. Because of this poaching rhino numbers have dwindled alarmingly. Do your bit by getting involved with a charity such as “Save the Rhino” foundation to help protect and ensure their survival as a species.
